First, check the "INPUT" label
Chargers, AC adapters and products have an "INPUT" label.
- If it says 100-240V, it covers the voltages of the countries in the list below (100–240V). No transformer is needed; if the socket shape is different, use a plug adapter
- If it says only 100V, it is meant for Japan. Do not use it as is in countries with a different voltage. Get a product that supports that country's voltage, or use a transformer (check the transformer's manual for which products and wattage it supports)
- For switchable products (e.g. 100-120V/200-240V), set the switch to the local voltage before use
Plug adapters vs transformers
- Plug adapter: only matches the socket shape. It does not change the voltage
- Transformer: changes the voltage. Used to run a 100V product in a country with a different voltage

Taking a hair iron on a plane
- Plug-in type (no battery): allowed in carry-on and checked baggage
- Battery type (cordless): allowed with conditions if the heating part and the battery can be separated. If they cannot be separated, not allowed in carry-on or checked baggage
- Gas type: allowed with conditions, up to 1. Spare gas cartridges are not allowed. On international flights, it is not permitted in the cabin unless it fits into a 1 liter clear bag
