This applies to personal effects and unaccompanied baggage for personal use; if you have both, they are counted together. Whether you can take items on the plane (such as alcohol strength and quantity) is a separate rule; see Bringing alcohol home and other guides.
1. Duty-free/tax-free allowance (for an adult)

2. How the 200,000 yen is counted
- The total overseas market value of all articles other than the above items must be under 200,000 yen
- There is no duty-free allowance for an article with a market value of more than 200,000 yen each (or each set)
- Any item whose overseas market value is under 10,000 yen is free of duty and/or tax and is not included in the total

3. Points to note
- Commodities and commercial samples are subject to duty and/or tax, since they are not regarded as being for personal use
- When your belongings exceed the allowance, duty and/or tax is applied to the amount in excess
- The Japanese version of the Customs page also states that people under 20 get no allowance for alcohol and tobacco, and children under 6 get no allowance except for items clearly for the child's own use (such as toys): Japan Customs (Japanese)
